About Us

Our History
Alf Koolen began his career in construction at a young age, learning the sheet metal trade from his father and managing job sites by 17. Starting with Applewood Air Conditioning Ltd. in 1974, he quickly advanced into leadership roles, eventually becoming a partner in a specialty HVAC company focused on high-end residential projects in Toronto.
After moving to British Columbia in 1989, Alf acquired M.A.W. Heating Ltd. and grew it into one of the largest residential HVAC companies in the Lower Mainland. He played an active role in industry organizations and helped shape standards still used today, while leading the company to multiple awards for excellence. Following its acquisition by Lennox Canada in 1999, Alf continued to drive growth, innovation, and operational improvements.
In 2002, Alf founded Koolen Consulting & Services Ltd. (KCS Heating Ltd.), where Noel MacDonald later joined as partner and leader in design and production. Supported by a strong administrative foundation and a team of over 50 skilled professionals, KCS continues to deliver high-quality HVAC solutions built on decades of experience and industry leadership.
